The links land now known as County Louth Golf Club “Baltray” was first discovered By Messrs Pentland & Gilroy back in 1892. They had already laid out some holes at nearby Mornington when one day they rowed across the river only to discover what was later proclaimed “one of the best pieces of golfing ground in the world “

A meeting in 1892 marked the formal beginning and though, like so many great courses Baltray has been modified, extended and improved, it quickly built up justifiable popularity. Nevertheless it wasn’t until the middle thirties when Tom Simpson weaved his spell that it earned its championship spurs. The new course was opened in 1938 by the Irish Open Champion James Bruen and despite some refinements and the repositioning of the Clubhouse much of Simpson’s work is recognisable today. In latter times refinement work has taken place under the direction of Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie.

It was the Ladies that first brought great honour to the club namely Mrs Clarrie Reddan who won an Irish Title in 1938 and two years later became the first Irishwoman to be selected for the Curtis Cup team, winning both her matches. She was picked again in 1948 along with a second member Philomena Garvey who went on to make six appearances. Philomena also went on to win The British Ladies & fifteen Irish championships.

The East of Ireland Championship a national championship set up by the club and the Golfing Union was played in 1941 and won by Joe Carr who went on to win a further eleven times. A young amateur named Darren Clarke won in 1989.

In 2003 the Club hosted the Vagliano Trophy with the GB&I team taking the honours.

Following in 2004 the club successfully hosted the Nissan Irish Open, victory going to the young Australian professional Brett Rumford. The Club also hosted the 2009 3 Irish Open which had a fairy tale ending, with a young Irish amateur Shane Lowry eventually emerging as victor.

Without doubt the “Baltray” experience is one to be savoured. It is a club renowned not only for its course and achievements but for the friendliness of the members and staff, not to mention a superb 19th hole with catering to match. For more details call +353 (0)41 9881530.
