Great golf, fresh seafood, rich history and easy access from Dublin. Here is everything you need to know about planning a golf trip to Baltray and the Boyne Valley.
Why the East Coast of Ireland is Perfect for a Golf Trip
When golfers think of Ireland, they often think of the wild west coast. But Ireland’s east coast offers a compelling alternative, combining world class golf with easy accessibility, a rich historical landscape and some of the finest food and hospitality the country has to offer.
At the heart of it all is the Boyne Valley region in County Louth and Meath, an area steeped in history, natural beauty and, for golfers, one of the finest links courses in the country.
Getting to Baltray
One of Baltray’s great advantages is its location. County Louth Golf Club is just 45 minutes from Dublin Airport, making it one of the most accessible top ranked links courses in Ireland. Belfast International Airport is approximately 90 minutes away, opening up the course to visitors travelling from the north as well.
For international golfers flying into Dublin, a tee time at Baltray can realistically be on the cards the same day you land.
The Golf
County Louth Golf Club is ranked among the top five courses in Ireland for good reason. The championship par 72 links, redesigned by Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay in 1938, stretches to 7,031 yards from the back tees and provides what many regard as the purest and fairest test of links golf in the country.
With four par 3s, five par 5s and nine par 4s spread across a layout where every hole runs in a different direction, no two rounds play the same. The wind is always a factor, the greens are always testing, and the satisfaction of a good score at Baltray is something that stays with you.
What to Do Beyond the Course
The Boyne Valley region offers far more than golf. Within a short drive of Baltray you will find the ancient passage tomb at Newgrange, the historic town of Drogheda with its medieval walls and vibrant food scene, Old Mellifont Abbey, Beaulieu House and Gardens, and miles of walking routes along the River Boyne.
For those who want to explore further, Newgrange Day Tours offers bespoke private tours taking in some of Ireland’s most iconic landscapes and landmarks, all in the comfort of a premium vehicle.
Where to Stay
There is a great selection of accommodation options close to the course, from the self catering Courtyard Queensborough just minutes from Baltray to well regarded hotels in Drogheda and Bettystown including The Marcy Hotel, Scholars Townhouse, The Glenside Hotel and the Boyne Valley Hotel and Country Club.
And for those who want to stay as close to the action as possible, County Louth Golf Club offers accommodation right within the clubhouse itself.
Where to Eat
Our own club restaurant is highly regarded for its fresh local seafood, sourced directly from the fishing trawlers in nearby Clogherhead. The famous Clogherhead Scampi alone is worth the visit. Drogheda town also offers an excellent and growing selection of restaurants and cafes to suit every taste and budget.
