The Course at Baltray
One of Ireland’s finest links courses, waiting to be played
One of Ireland’s finest links courses, waiting to be played
County Louth Golf Club, known and loved by golfers simply as Baltray, is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest links courses. Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Boyne estuary on the east coast of Ireland, the course regularly features among the top links courses in the country and has earned a reputation for providing one of the purest and fairest tests of links golf anywhere in the world.
The course was redesigned in 1938 by renowned golf architects Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay, and their vision has stood the test of time beautifully. Playing to a par of 72 and measuring 7,031 yards from the back tees, it is a championship layout in every sense. What makes Baltray truly special is the variety it offers. As former Ryder Cup Captain and Baltray devotee Paul McGinley put it, all the holes run in different directions, meaning golfers face a genuinely different challenge on every hole. There are no easy yards here, but there is enormous satisfaction to be found in every round.
Beyond the course itself, Baltray boasts superb practice facilities to help you warm up and sharpen your game before you head to the first tee.

Understanding your course rating is an important part of getting the most from the World Handicap System. Under the WHS, a Course Rating represents the expected score for a scratch golfer playing under normal conditions, while a Bogey Rating reflects the expected score for a higher-handicapped player. Together, these two figures are used to calculate the Slope Rating, which measures the relative difficulty of a course for all players compared to a scratch golfer. The higher the Slope Rating, the more strokes a higher-handicapped player will need to compete on equal terms. This unified system means your Handicap Index travels with you, giving you a fair and equal game no matter which course or tees you play from.
